Yeah, didn't think you would see this on MY blog did ya?
So since Corey and I left for vacation we drove 7 1/2 hours to Perdido Key, Florida to visit my parents and get in some serious R&R. This place is your vacation from vacation-meaning there is not a whole lot to do here, which is PERFECT. You don't have to feel bad for not going out all day and doing a zillion activities, the only thing expected of you is to grab a chair and park your butt on the beach all day long and catch up on your reading. PERFECT. I can do that. What I couldn't get over was the lack of options for HEALTHY food on the way here. Thank goodness my husband packed our snacks-dried fruits and nuts made by his truly, or else we woulda been in some serious trouble. We did however underestimate the energy of a good meal provides when traveling longer distances.
So whats a girl or guy to do when trying to stay healthy, loose weight, be food conscious? Tough to say when the highways are littered with McDonald's, Steak-n-Shake, and Wendy's. So let's talk travel. There are so many different scenarios I could run through-
1. So you're staying at a hotel and have to leave bright and early-they do have a continental breakfast being served from 6am-9am and it's full of kids cereal, waffles, sugary orange juice and a small variety of fruits and yogurt. I mean its obvious in this situation-go for the fruit (wash it off first!!) and yogurt. You'll feel better in the next 20 minutes eating that rather than downing 5 full fat waffles and kickin yourself in the arse later. TRUST ME, I have done this enough to know.
2. On the road all day? Think ahead and make turkey wraps, skip the mayo and use mustard. Pack fruits, veggies, and nuts. Get some kind of protein in there so that you have sufficient energy. Lower your intake on carbs since you won't be as active (breads, cereals, etc.) Drink green tea to stay awake and alert.
3. You have NO FOOD and the only place left is some fast food chain. Most fast food chains offer some kind of "health item" (I use parentheses here because although it's their health section, it's not as good as if it were from a local farmer, but hey when times are tough) check it out and see if it's too your liking. Get the salad, or the grilled chicken breast and skip the bun (and the fried chicken!). Try to avoid the "smoothies full of fruit" they are typically loaded with extra sugar and high fructose corn syrup that gives you a sugar high and then crash, now who wants that anyway? Chick-fil-a is one the best fast food options because not only does their chicken rock(in my opinion), but if you eat bread you can order whole wheat or if you are like me and eating primal, skip the bread and ask for an extra serving of lettuce. OH AND ALWAYS DRINK WATER-skip the diet coke-you are just digging your grave with all those chemicals.
We actually stopped at McDonald's and then after using the bathroom looked at the menu for a moment, then immediately left. No offense, but McDonald's makes me want to vomit. Harsh, I know, but really? Look at the crap they are serving. Your body would benefit from fasting for one meal then to work extra hard to process all those preservatives.
So lesson is, KNOW BEFORE YOU GO and hopefully you won't regret eating that big mac, steak and shake or loaded potato.
